Maritime Universities Offering Mi'kmaw Language Courses:
 

Memorial University                                      St. John's, Newfoundland

      Students who minor in Native Studies at Memorial are able to take the following courses that focus on the Mi'kmaw language:

 2040 Structure of Mi'kmaq
 2060 Aboriginal Languages of Eastern Canada
 4040 and 4041 Linguistic Structure of Mi'kmaq I & II


St. Francis Xavier University                          Antigonish, Nova Scotia

      St. F. X. offers the following Mi'kmaw language courses every alternate year:

 454 Mi'kmaq Language
 455 Reading and Writing in Mi'kmaq
      St. F. X. has graduated several Mi'kmaw teachers in the past few years.  In 1997, seven Mi'kmaw teachers graduated with Bachelor of Education degrees.  In 1998, another five received their education degrees.  This year, four more will add to the number of certified fluent teachers.

      In addition, the St. F. X. Education division has been actively involved in assisting native educators by providing an off-campus course in Reading and Writing (Ed 455) in Eskasoni in 1997.  This university has also coordinated the first education conference (Lnui'sultinej) in 1998 which focused on educational initiatives in the Mi'kmaw language.  The conference this year will be held June 3, 4, and 5th.
 

St. Mary's University                                   Halifax, Nova Scotia

      St. Mary's University does not have any courses in the Mi'kmaw language.  It does have a Department of Modern Languages and Classics.  If an individual wanted to study linguistics, St. Mary's offers a minor, an honours and a major in linguistics.  This undergraduate course would be prerequisite for an individual who wanted to concentrate their studies in the Mi'kmaw language.
